Chasing light through photography
When light, shadows, patterns, symmetry & my creative spirit merge
I like sunny days, especially when I'm behind the wheel. The drive to work every day takes me through a stretch lined with tall trees. As I cruise down the road, the sunlight filters through the branches and warms my hands on the steering wheel. I love how the light dances on my hand as I drive along. It feels like the sun is riding along with me, keeping me company on this trip.
My interest in light extends into various aspects of my life. Recently, I have been more attentive to the interplay of light and shadows in my environment. I like to watch the gentle morning light filter in, casting shapes and patterns in my home. In the evenings, I appreciate the warm golden light streaming through my office windows, crafting beautiful designs on the walls and plants.
I usually spend the majority of my time at home and in my workspace. The photos I have shared today are taken from these two locations. When I start to feel a bit confined as a photographer, I ask myself to see if I can turn the ordinary aspects of daily life into something artistic. With this mindset I pay closer attention to my surroundings.
I often observe the various shapes, sizes, patterns, and symmetry that sunlight creates. Watching the shadows as they form and blend with the light is magical. When I take a closer look, it seems like there's a miniature world hidden within the interplay of light and shadows. At least, that's how I like to envision it. They say the greatest use of imagination is in the act of creativity.
Rumi is one of my favourite Sufi poets. For those who may not have heard of him, he was a Sufi saint and poet from Persia in the 13th century. In a previous post, I shared how his writings deeply influence my photography. To wrap up this post, I would like to share one of his beautiful quotes about light that truly resonates with me. Rumi says, If light is in your heart, then you will find your way home. This quote often comes to mind as I chase light in my photography. I feel a sense of homecoming when light, shadows, patterns, symmetry, and my creative spirit all merge into one.
